How to Make a PVC Fishing Rod Holder

One of the best ways to build a fishing rod holder is using PVC and some wood. PVC is relatively cheap to buy at any local hardware store and is strong enough to hold your pole with even the biggest fish on the line. Making a homemade fishing rod holder is very easy to do any anyone that has used a hammer and saw before should have no problem completing the task in an afternoon.

Tools and Equipment

  • 2 feet of PVC pipe for an average size pole.  If you cant cut it yourself try asking your local hardware store to cut it for your, the almost always will!
  • 1 2×4 piece of wood
  • 3 screws
  • A hammer
  • Wood seal and finish
  • Wood glue
  • A power drill
  • A hand saw or circular saw

Instructions

  1. Cut 6 inches off of each side of your 2×4 using your handsaw of circular saw. Remember, measure twice and cut once. This project can be completed with 1 piece of wood as long as the wood is cut correctly.
  2. These pieces that have been cut off will be the legs for your holder. Glue them to the bottom of the 2×4. Remember to clean the wood before you apply glue. Make sure you position the wood exactly where you want it before the glue dries.  Wood glue is often impossible to remove without ruining the wood.
  3. Drill 2 holes in your PVC pipe a few inches apart. Also drill 2 matching holes into the side of the wood. This is how we will be attaching the PVC pipe to the holding unit.
  4. Before we insert the screws into the pipe we need to finish the wood. Ask your local hardware store what the best type of finish is for the water in your area. Some finishes work better on salt water than others. This is an essential step in the process, if the wood is left unfinished it could start to rot.
  5. Finally, insert your screws and attach the PVC pipe to the side of the wood. Be careful when inserting the screws, too much pressure could potentially cause cracks in the PVC pipe.  Congratulations, you are finished. Now  all that is left to do is catch some fish.

Summary

Building your own fishing rod holder is simple and can be done in a few hours and a trip to the hardware store. It can be a fun project to build something for your boat rather than ordering it online.  While there are many fancy rod holders out there nothing can beat the feeling of creating a tool in a few hours your garage or workshop.
